My name is Michaela Williams. I am ten years old and in fifth grade. I am a co-founder with two of my brothers, Ben and Luke, of a foundation called “Together We CAN Make a Difference.”
We came up with the idea for this foundation while we were reading a World Vision magazine with our mom. We were reading an article about villages full of families who have no clean water to drink. Each day the children have to get up early and skip school to walk a long way to a lake full of dirty water while carrying heavy water jugs on their heads just to get water for their families. This is hard work and it can take them all day. What is even worse is that the water they get is very dirty and usually makes them very sick. But that is all they have. Then we thought about what we can do about it.
That’s how “Together We CAN Make a Difference” started. We collect empty soda cans and bag them until we have enough cans to take to the recycling center. After we arrive at the recycling center we pour the cans into a bin and then the people that work there weigh them and pay us money based on how many pounds of cans we recycle. We have recycled hundreds of pounds of cans totaling several hundred dollars.
To help us collect a lot of cans we have asked all our friends and the kids at church to bring us all the cans they can. We are even having a contest at children’s worship to see who can fill up their bin with cans the fastest. Our grandparents and neighborhood friends help us by bringing us their empty cans too.
It’s very cool, and I like doing it a lot. Our goal is to raise enough money to help build deep water wells to give these people clean water to drink and wash in. We’ve already raised enough money to pay for several shares of a deep water well.
I am glad we have this opportunity to help others get clean water to drink. The feeling when you help someone is so amazing! This is a fantastic opportunity to set a Christ-like example for other people.
